She isn't a bad character, however she could have not been in the story and it would not have mattered. My only negative criticism of the story is, Lois. For some reason it never dawned on me that Stephen King has been writing books for far longer than I have been alive. I actually re-read the book because it only hit me near the end what some of the passages were referencing. There are multiple Dark Tower references which actually went over my head because I have never read the main stories I have only read novels and short stories connected to the series. This causes deep divides within the community which makes it very hard for Ralph to figure out who the target is, and how exactly to stop his/her death from occurring.Īlong the way, Ralph develops new relationships, and comes into contact with many horrifying people/beings. If this wasn't bad enough, Susan Day (Pro-Choice spokesperson) is set to give a speech within the community. He develops insomnia which starts out as irritating, but soon becomes horrifying.ĭuring these periods of wakefulness he soon the discovers that all is not well in his town, and that someone/something has targeted a very important person within the community. When the story opens, we have Ralph Roberts who is grieving the impending loss of his wife.
I enjoyed reading about a main character who isn’t a young strapping male, but instead is a man old enough to be a grandfather. Roland, however, threw the book away because he thought it would mislead him and that it felt a bit like a thinny.I really liked the book. The connection to his quest was un-earthed by the Calvins and they believed that it would help him on his journey concluding it was the keystone book to The Dark Tower Series. Insomnia also appears as a book in the series. Instead of each level representing a different universe, each level is another plane of existence/level of consciousness in the same universe.

This is the only work outside of The Dark Tower Series where the Crimson King actually appears.Ed Deepneau is a distant relative of Aaron and Nancy Deepneau.At one point in the novel it states that a man named Roland rolled over in his sleep while in a desert.Ralph gives his life to save Helen's daughter, Natalie, from Atropos. Ralph and Lois get married and live together for many years. It is revealed that only one person in the Civic Center was of cosmic significance, Patrick Danville. Ralph stands tall in the face of the King and is able to defuse it. Ralph intends to defuse Ed's bomb, but the Crimson King himself arrives to prevent this. Ralph uses his powers to enter Ed's plane that he intends to crash into the Derry Civic Center. They are partially successful, but Atropos promises revenge. Ralph and Lois venture into Atropos' lair in order to thwart his part of the Crimson King's plan. They reveal that Atropos is serving as an agent of the Crimson King to bring about the death of everyone who attends Susan Day's speech through the person of Ed Deepneau. Clotho and Lachesis want to preserve the natural order of death while Atropos brings chaos. They name the two that they talk to Clotho and Lachesis and the other one, Atropos. Together, they confront the little bald doctors. Ralph discovers that a similar thing has been happening to his sweetheart, Lois Chasse. Meanwhile, Ed has joined forces with a pro-life group to protest a speech given in Derry by noted-pro-choice activist, Susan Day. Ralph begins questioning his sanity after he starts seeing auras around people and "little bald doctors". He comes aware that something is wrong with his neighbor, Ed Deepneau, after several disturbing incidents, including the beating of his wife, Helen. It also explores one of King's common themes when writing in the subject of domestic violence.Īfter his wife's death, Ralph Roberts begins to suffer from insomnia.
